Mihajlo Pupin

 

That Serbian inventor and scientist Mihajlo Idvorski Pupin has a crater on the moon named after him? In addition to his numerous patents, he developed a means of greatly increasing long distance telephone communication, named Pupinization, in his honor. AT&T acquired the rights to his patent, makig him wealthy.

 

He also refined how X-rays are taken, cutting down the image development time from one hour to a few minutes, and was a Professor Emeritus at Colombia University, where Pupin Hall is named after him. He was the President of the Institute of Radio Engineers, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the New York Academy of Sciences. President of five esteemed Scientific organizations!

 

In 1911 Pupin became Consul in New York for the Kingdom of Serbia, and his  many conversations with President Woodrow Wilson helped Serbia’s standing on the world stage.

 

Pupin wrote many technical papers as well as books and in 1924, Pupin’s autobiography, “From Immigrant to Inventor“, won the Pulitzer Prize.

 

 He died in 1935, and 11 years later, in 1946, the Mihajlo Pupin Institute, an engineering and technological research institution, was founded in Belgrade.

 

He said, “Truth is beautiful and divine no matter how humble its origin”.

 

A poet as well as a scientist!
