Give us a Clooney, George… have you had your eyes done?

Grey hair and craggy charm have taken George Clooney a long way in Hollywood.

Bags under the eyes, it seems, are not part of the deal. As Clooney, 48, arrived in London yesterday he was looking rather less elegantly weathered than usual.

The eyebags which were so apparent when he attended the Academy Awards last year had vanished.

The difference left many observers wondering whether the Oscar-winning actor had had surgery.

Perhaps keeping up with a gorgeous new girlfriend 18 years his junior may have inspired a makeover.

Foxy: Clooney and girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis at last night's premiere of Fantastic Mr Fox in Leicester Square

Elisabetta Canali, an Italian pinup and TV presenter, appeared at Clooney’s side at the premiere of Fantastic Mr Fox in London last night.

Clooney laughed off questions over his age-defying looks. ‘It’s mostly down to lots of drinking and lots of drugs,’ he said.

George has occasionally spoken about surgery in the past, but as he is renowned for being a Hollywood prankster, it’s difficult to know whether or not he is joking.

In an interview two years ago, the Oscar-winning actor said he’d ‘had his eyes done’ during a pre-Oscars special.

He said: ‘I had my eyes done. Can you tell? I think it’s important to look awake.’

If George had undergone an eye bag removal operation, otherwise known as Blepharoplasty, he wouldn’t be the first in Hollywood to do so

The operation is one of the most popular among Hollywood’s ageing stars and costs about £6,000 in British cosmetic surgeries.

But last night the attention was not on Clooney’s appearance alone.

His voice, or rather his accent, has been criticised by fans of Fantastic Mr Fox, Roald Dahl’s classic children’s story.

They are upset that Mr Fox – voiced by Clooney in the movie adaptation – speaks with an American accent.

To make matters worse, the evil gang of farmers – Boggis, Bunce and Bean – have been given British accents.

A spokesman for the Roald Dahl literary estate said: ‘Roald Dahl’s widow Felicity is very happy with the film.

‘In terms of the American actors who have been used to provide voices for the characters, Felicity thinks that it is an international book and should be an international film too.’
