Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow spent turkey day together.

The actresses attended a gala to celebrate the re-opening of Hotel La Mamounia in Marrakech, Morocco, on Thursday.

The two likely had a lot to talk about: Not only did they both once romance Brad Pitt, but their love lives have been scandal-ridden lately.

The new Us Weekly (on newsstands now) reports that Aniston, 40, just can’t seem to get over her serial dater ex, John Mayer. And Paltrow, 37 — who attended Thursday’s gala without husband Chris Martin — is battling reports that Martin cheated on her with Kate Bosworth (friends of Paltrow and Martin insist their marriage is fine).

Nicole Kidman spent a little quality time with 16-month-old daughter Sunday Rose, having a girls’ night out in New York with the toddler.

The actress, who is there on business, took her adorable red-headed daughter out on a rainy night, and both had to shelter under a large umbrella.

Sunday Rose, Nicole’s daughter with husband Keith Urban, looked grown up in a pretty frilly green dress, white tights and black shoes.

Coiffured Nicole wore a sequinned black dress, fishnets and red patent shoes.

The Australia actress is due to start filming The Danish Girl with Gwyneth Paltrow. She stars as transsexual Danish painter Einar Wegener, while Paltrow will play his wife Gerda.

The film is a fictionalised account of Wegener’s transformation from man to woman.
Meanwhile, Nicole’s husband, country singer Keith Urban, has described how life changed when he became a father to Sunday Rose.

He said: ‘I think, as Nicole has said, it’s just the stretching of the heart. It is an indescribable feeling. It was much like the first time Sunday cried, when she came into the world.’

He said he has altered his music career so he can spend more time with his family.

‘Now we have Sunday, it is about enjoying the simple pleasures – just being able to say “Goodnight” to my girls and not be on the phone doing it.’

Variety is reporting that Gwyneth Paltrow will join Nicole Kidman in The Danish Girl, an adaptation of the David Ebershoff novel about the first post-operative transsexual. The tome tells the story of the relationship between transsexual Einar Wegener and his wife. Kidman will play Einar and Paltrow will play the wife Greta, who stood by her partner through the sex-change operation. Thomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) is directing a script by Lucinda Coxon.

Poor old Posh Spice. Did some WAG tell her the kids’ school fair was fancy dress this year? Because while everyone else was in jeans, dresses – you know, normal clothes – there she was, spider-like, in black leather, hobbled by her absurd 6in heels.

And the crowning glory of the crazy get-up? The Thunderbirds shoulder pads, which swooped upwards like the roof of a Chinese tea house. She looked for all the world as if she had borrowed her son’s padded Batman costume.

Frankly, I couldn’t help but marvel at the kindness and self-control of Posh’s fellow parents, none of whom were actually laughing at the sad old stick.

But, of course, she’s not the only celeb who’s been spotted in this season’s superhero-style shoulders. Which begs the question: are ‘coathanger shoulders’ the most ridiculous trend ever?

Way back in March, Madonna wore a crystal-encrusted dress by Christophe Decarnin at Balmain, designed for his autumn 2009 collection, complete with his trademark bonkers padding and inspired, he revealed, by Michael Jackson in his Eighties’ heyday.

Balmain clothes instantly became celebrity must-haves. Madonna was followed by Kate Moss, who wore her sparkly frock to a birthday party in April (she burst the seam going home).

Since then, Posh and Gwyneth Paltrow have been spotted in the label, whose dresses cost up to £12,000 and jackets retail at around £4,000

And it is far from the only label to be shoulder-pad mad. While Balmain is spearheading the ‘pagoda’ shoulder, designer Gareth Pugh favours a superhero look, and Louis Vuitton is pushing Eighties-style square padding, as seen on Krystle Carrington from Dynasty.

And for me, that’s the problem. You see, I was there first time round. In 1986, I was 23, recently graduated and ambitious.

So I adopted the era’s power-dressing uniform of black Lycra miniskirt, opaque tights, high-heeled courts, big hair and a red jacket with whopping great shoulder pads. I looked, of course, a complete sight.

But then, in the Eighties, you really didn’t have a choice. Everything from overcoats to T-shirts came with shoulder pads.

Or you could buy giant white foam house bricks which could be attached with Velcro inside your ordinary shoulder-shaped clothes.

They showed through most clothes like ’shoulder VPL’, and were notoriously unreliable, shifting about at the slightest movement.

This provided interesting effects: a hunchback, a third bosom, or they’d simply drop out the bottom of your jumper.

It was common to be out with friends or on a date, and suddenly they’d lean forward confidentially and whisper: ‘I think your shoulder pads have moved.’

Luckily, no photographic evidence remains of these fashion faux pas, but the memory of them is enough to ensure that I won’t be adopting the trend this time round.

You see, I don’t think anyone-improves their looks by moving their shoulders several inches closer to their ears. I recently ordered a matelotstyle sweater from Topshop.

On the website it looked perfect – gamine and cute with a touch of Jane Birkin about it. But pulling it out of the tissue paper, I was surprised by how squashy it felt. To my horror, I realised it had those familiar foam pads stitched in the shoulders.

I tried it on – and, yes, I looked stupid. Butch and scary. I would say I couldn’t wait to remove the pads, but thankfully shoulder pad technology doesn’t seem to have moved on much since 1985, and they fell off all by themselves.

Of course, Balmain shoulder pads aren’t made of foam and Velcro. Kathryn Sargent, senior bespoke cutter at Savile Row tailors Gieves & Hawkes, explains that couture and bespoke shoulders are created using pads of cotton wadding.

On a man’s suit, the wadding is designed to fit the cut; but on something like Posh’s jacket, it can be used like a sausage to stuff and distort the shoulder.

The theory behind such pads is that the broadness of your shoulders will create the illusion of a smaller waist and hips.

I’m not convinced. Partly because, with Posh-style pads, nobody’s looking at your waist and hips – they are too busy laughing at your shoulders.

They also convey a certain macho quality: they scream muscle, power and aggression.

So is it the prospect of a Tory election victory that’s making us so keen to revisit the Eighties and power dressing?

Or is it a reaction to the vulnerability we feel in the fallout of the global banking collapse?

Whatever the truth, Posh’s outfit definitely makes her look more ridiculous. Take it from me, she’ll look back and cringe.
